Undercoat is a collection of vivid ekphrastic poems from an established Australian poet. In lively dialogue with referenced works of visual art, the book is organised into three sections: 'Hill End Poems', which respond to a variety of paintings from the Hill End artists' colony in New South Wales; 'Poems on Canvas' which engage with different visual media from Australia and internationally; and 'The Human Face' which, like the portraits it focuses on, examines this fundamental marker of humanness and its various representations. This is a well-crafted, insightful and often playful exploration of the ways in which both poetic and visual languages might intersect to create exciting new reading experiences.
